On July 24, 2026, Anthropic introduced Claude Opus 5, an update to its hybrid reasoning model that promises improved performance on coding and knowledge tasks. According to Anthropic, Claude Opus 5 more than doubles the performance of its predecessor, Opus 4.8, at the same cost. The company describes Claude Opus 5 as a thoughtful and proactive model that approaches the frontier intelligence of Claude Fable 5 at half the price. Opus 5 is now the default model on Claude Max and the strongest model available on Claude Pro. For instance, on the Frontier-Bench v0.1, Claude Opus 5 outperforms all other models and more than doubles the performance of Opus 4.8 at a lower cost per task. The pricing for Opus 5 is set at $5 per million input tokens and $25 per million output tokens, the same as Opus 4.8. Developers can utilize Claude Opus 5 through the Claude API. Alongside Opus 5, Anthropic also released two beta updates, including mid-conversation tool changes on the Claude Platform and automatic fallbacks on the API.
