Recent Advances in AI Speech Generation and Smartphone Chips

Google and Qualcomm have launched new AI speech generation models and smartphone chips, driving industry development.

Google recently launched two new text-to-speech models, Gemini 3.8 Flash TTS and Gemini 3.8 Flash-Lite TTS, available through its cloud platform. These models feature highly similar application programming interfaces, making it relatively simple for developers to use them side-by-side. Flash-Lite TTS is optimized for cost efficiency and inference speed, while Flash TTS offers better audio quality at a higher price point. Notably, Flash TTS can generate speech in 130 languages at launch, while Flash-Lite TTS supports 101 languages. Both models provide access to a library of over 2,000 prepackaged voices, and developers can create custom voices using natural language prompts. Additionally, a synthetic voice can be generated based on a 30-second audio sample, provided the speaker's consent is secured. Google employs a technology called SynthID to embed an audio watermark in AI-generated speech, which is inaudible to humans but detectable by AI detection tools. On the other hand, Qualcomm announced two flagship smartphone processors at its annual Snapdragon Summit: the Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 6 and Snapdragon 8 Elite Extreme Gen 6, focusing on enhancing AI capabilities. These chips feature new sensing hubs that can run small models of up to 200 million parameters, enabling smartphones to operate a personal scribe locally and differentiate between speakers. The Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 6 includes a new accelerator designed for efficient model execution, while the Extreme version can run a 30-billion-parameter mixture-of-experts model locally. This means that while the overall model size is 30 billion, only a subset of parameters is activated for specific tasks. Both chips can utilize AI to enhance vocals and reduce noise, and they support advanced video recording capabilities. The launch of these technologies signifies further advancements in AI within the realms of speech generation and smartphones, highlighting a trend where users increasingly rely on their phones for AI functionalities.
